Nappy need (also known as nappy poverty) is a very real issue affecting households throughout the UK today. We believe raising awareness of this issue is a vital step in reducing the stigma which surrounds the topic and encourages the communities we operate in to support in any way they can.
We were incredibly honored to have been nominated and shortlisted for the Community Champion category in the Local Hero Awards 2023. Although we didn't win, we were overjoyed to get the opportunity to raise awareness on the topic of Nappy Need and the work NappiRunz does in the community.
In April 2023, NappiRunz reached out to Monica Lennon MSP to ask for information on the measures being taken by the Scottish Government to handle or highlight the issue of nappy poverty. We were delighted to have Monica join us for the day at our Nappy HQ to see the work we do and listen to the very real stories we hear from families and charities we support, struggling with nappy need.
"Following a visit to NappiRunz to coincide with Reusable Nappy Week 2023, Monica Lennon MSP said:
"The hidden issue of nappy need is a serious issue that needs a serious response from the Scottish Government.
"Reusable Nappy Week has shone a light on the initiatives that local authorities and charities are providing, and I was delighted to visit NappiRunz to earn more about their fantastic work.
"I have written to the Scottish Government to ask them to consider proposals for improving affordability and accessibility of nappies, including reusables that are kinder to peoples pockets and the planet"
Our founder Toyin was interviewed for an investigative piece on poverty affecting young families across Scotland.
“We supply families across the Lothians and Fife, collecting donations and handing them out to health visitors, charities and food banks. We can see from the number of calls we receive that many families are living in crisis, having to make choices about how to eat and pay their living costs. The price of nappies has skyrocketed, especially larger nappies for disabled children. I fear many mums and children are becoming socially isolated because they cannot afford all the changes their baby needs, so they are rationing nappies. It’s unacceptable.”

In March 2019 we had a BBC camera crew in tow for a day filming a local segment for "The Nine" on BBC Scotland. This was our first big exposure and we saw a sharp increase for the demand in nappies in the immediate weeks following this segment. It also gave us an insight into nappy need across the whole of Scotland and not just in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas.
