NappiRunz works to provide support to families living in nappy need by collecting and donating leftover unused nappies. We partner with a number of other charities in and around Edinburgh to strive towards a more equal Scotland, where no one has to go without essential items.
Nappy need is a hidden but critical issue which affects many families living in conditions of poverty within the UK. It can be understood as the inability to afford enough nappies to maintain proper infant hygiene. This has extremely negative impacts on children's health, leading to conditions like nappy rash and sores, as well as for maternal mental health.
At base, nappy need is a form of hygiene poverty, defined by The Hygiene Bank as the lack of ability 'to afford many of the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products most of us take for granted'.
Though there is no formal statistical research on nappy poverty in the UK, End Child Poverty estimates that there were 4.3 million children living in poverty in the UK in 2019-20 (30 per cent of children).
NappiRunz sees nappy poverty as a problem that we can solve by working together and raising awareness. Each small act of kindness takes us that one step closer.
