NappiRunz supports families by collecting and donating spare unused nappies. We partner with a number of other charities across Edinburgh and the Lothians, to build a society where no child has to go without.
Nappy need is a hidden but critical issue affecting many families across the UK. It can be understood as the inability to afford enough nappies to maintain proper infant hygiene. This can have extremely negative impacts on children's health, leading to conditions like nappy rash and sores, as well as for maternal mental health.
At base, nappy need is a form of hygiene poverty, defined by The Hygiene Bank as the inability 'to afford many of the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products most of us take for granted'.
Though there is no formal statistical research on nappy poverty in the UK, End Child Poverty estimates that there were 4.3 million children living in poverty in the UK in 2019-20 (30 per cent of children).
NappiRunz sees nappy poverty as a problem that we can solve, by working together and raising awareness. Each small act of kindness takes us one step closer - so please get involved!
